The project brief

Converting a welding workshop into a durable training environment

In November 2022, Superior Resin Solutions was appointed to refurbish approximately 450m² of flooring within an existing welding workshop in Cardiff.

The building was being converted into a training centre, but the new space would still experience demanding use and regular impact. The client therefore required a robust flooring system selected for longevity rather than a short-term cosmetic finish.

The existing concrete contained minor damaged areas, cracks and joints that needed to be properly prepared and repaired before the new flooring could be installed.

Following preparation, SRS installed a 9mm Resdev Pumadur HF heavy-duty polyurethane floor screed in dark grey.

Diamond grind the concrete

The concrete was mechanically prepared using diamond grinding with diamond tooling to create the required surface for the new flooring system.

Complete the epoxy repairs

Minor damaged areas and cracks were chased out and filled using epoxy mortar before installation of the new flooring build-up.

Prime and scatter

Following mechanical preparation and repairs, the substrate was primed and scattered ready for installation of the Pumadur HF polyurethane screed.

Install 9mm Pumadur HF and treat the joints

The dark grey Pumadur HF polyurethane floor screed was installed at 9mm before the joints were cut through and filled using Resdev Expand Jointing Compound.

Prepare

The 450m² concrete floor was mechanically diamond ground using diamond tooling.

Control conditions

Cold November conditions required heaters to warm the room and flooring products during the installation programme.

Install and finish

The floor was primed and scattered, the 9mm Pumadur HF polyurethane screed installed, and the joints cut through and filled using Resdev Expand Jointing Compound.
