Car park surfacing specified for traffic, water and movement

A car park surface has to cope with turning tyres, braking, tracked-in water, road salts, vehicle fluids and regular cleaning. An exposed deck also faces sunlight, rainfall and temperature changes.

The right car park surfacing solution depends on the substrate, movement, drainage, expected traffic and what lies below the deck. An internal wearing surface and a crack-bridging waterproofing system perform different jobs. For adjoining premises, explore our commercial resin flooring and industrial resin flooring services.

SRS supports main contractors, property managers, facilities teams and developers with new car park surfacing and refurbishment enquiries.

Car park surfacing for decks, ramps and parking areas

Each car park surfacing area is assessed separately so that the finish suits its use and the level of protection required.

01 / EXPOSED DECKS

Rooftop & external car parks

Trafficable waterproofing systems selected for weather exposure, UV resistance, movement and protection of the spaces below. Drainage and edge details form part of the specification.

02 / INTERNAL DECKS

Intermediate & basement levels

Resin traffic coatings and suitable protection systems for parking decks, circulation routes and internal ramps. Moisture, water carried in by vehicles and the condition of the base are reviewed.

03 / HIGH-STRESS AREAS

Vehicle ramps & turning zones

Textured wearing surfaces specified around gradients, braking, acceleration and repeated tyre movement. Aggregate, build-up and cleaning requirements need to work together.

04 / REFURBISHMENT

Existing car park resurfacing

Assessment of worn finishes, failed coatings and local defects before agreeing removal, preparation, repair and replacement. Overlay is considered only where the existing build-up is suitable.

05 / MOVEMENT & LAYOUT

Bays, crossings & walkways

Compatible markings and contrasting zones complete the car park surfacing layout, including bays, crossings, arrows and designated routes. The layout should support the site’s wider traffic management plan.

Car park surfacing systems compared

A surface can look similar while providing a different level of protection. We distinguish the wearing finish from the waterproofing function before a system is selected.

On smaller screens, scroll the boxed table sideways to compare all columns.

Car park surfacing systems and specification considerations
Surfacing route Typical purpose What to confirm
Resin traffic deck coating Wearing surface, colour, grip and protection for suitable internal decks and parking areas. Substrate moisture, adhesion, traffic, aggregate and whether a separate waterproofing membrane is required.
Flexible waterproofing deck system Trafficable protection where exposure, cracking and water ingress need a coordinated membrane and wearing finish. Movement, tested system performance, joints, drainage, upstands, terminations and the use of the space below.
High-friction ramp surfacing Textured finishes for suitable ramps, access lanes and high-stress vehicle areas. Gradient, turning and braking, substrate, aggregate, wear, cleaning and any waterproofing requirement.
Resin bound aggregate Decorative surfacing for suitable ground-level parking, entrances and access areas. Designed vehicle loading, base stability, turning stresses, falls and the complete drainage construction.
Specification first: resin bound is not a substitute for a waterproofing membrane on a suspended deck. Final product selection, thickness, coverage and performance follow the agreed project specification and manufacturer guidance.

Deckmaster car park systems

SRS has completed a South Wales car park surfacing using Deckmaster products. The Deckmaster range includes dedicated waterproofing systems and traffic coatings with different build-ups and application requirements.

We assess the project before selecting the relevant system. Product names, membrane requirements, finish and performance are confirmed in the written specification.

Detailing is part of the protection

Drains, channels, column bases, thresholds, perimeter edges and movement joints need practical details that work with the chosen system.

Crack-bridging performance does not mean that a coating can simply cover every moving joint. Existing leaks and structural concerns need investigation before the surfacing scope is agreed.

Car park surfacing preparation, repairs and details

New resin depends on a sound, suitably prepared base. Loose coatings, weak material, contamination and defective repairs need to be identified before installation.

  • Survey: review the surface, moisture, damage, drainage, movement and existing coating build-up.
  • Prepare: select suitable mechanical preparation and removal methods for the substrate and specified products.
  • Repair: treat agreed local defects and detail cracks, joints, edges and transitions appropriately.
  • Install: apply the specified primer, membrane where required, wearing layers, aggregate and finish.
  • Check: inspect the work against the specification and agree curing, reopening and aftercare.

Suspected structural deterioration needs appropriate specialist assessment. A new coating does not replace structural repairs or resolve inadequate drainage on its own.

Grip, durability & appearance

Car park surfacing finishes for real operating conditions

Texture & slip resistance

The aggregate and finish should suit wet conditions, pedestrians, vehicles and cleaning. Where testing is specified, assess the installed finish using the agreed method and conditions.

More about slip-resistant resin finishes →

Vehicle fluids & exposure

Oil, fuel, road salts and cleaning chemicals need checking against the exact product and exposure. Chemical resistance is not a blanket promise against every substance or prolonged spill.

Colour & surface wear

Colour, UV resistance and aggregate should be agreed for the location. Tyre marking, dirt and local wear can occur; routine cleaning and timely maintenance remain necessary.

Bridge & footbridge resin surfacing

Planning a bridge deck, footbridge or pedestrian ramp project? Send SRS the drawings, substrate details and surfacing specification for a suitability review.

Bridge surfacing needs to account for movement, adhesion, texture, exposure and the structure’s loading limits. Steel, concrete and timber decks can need different preparation and complete surfacing systems.

A project-specific technical review

We will review the required system, manufacturer support, installation requirements and any client or asset-owner approvals before confirming whether SRS can take on the package.

The South Wales photographs on this page show car park work. A bridge specification is assessed separately rather than assuming that a car park product or approval transfers to a bridge.

Car park surfacing FAQs

Car park surfacing: questions about decks and refurbishment

What is resin car park surfacing?

It is a resin-based wearing surface or complete deck system installed over a suitable prepared base. Depending on the specification, the build-up can include a primer, waterproofing membrane, aggregate-dressed wearing layers, finish and markings.

Can you refurbish an existing car park surface?

Yes. SRS reviews existing car parks for resin resurfacing and refurbishment. The condition of the substrate, coating adhesion, damage and drainage determine whether suitable areas can be overlaid or whether removal and repairs are needed first.

Does every car park resin coating provide waterproofing?

No. A traffic wearing coat is not automatically a crack-bridging waterproofing system. The deck construction, exposure, movement and use of the space below determine the required membrane and details.

Do you install Deckmaster products?

Yes. SRS has completed the South Wales car park project shown here using Deckmaster products. The exact product and build-up for a new enquiry are selected after the site requirements and manufacturer’s specification have been reviewed.

Can resin be applied over asphalt or existing coatings?

Sometimes, subject to the exact product and substrate assessment. Compatibility, condition, adhesion, moisture and movement must be checked. An asphalt-compatible system is not suitable for every asphalt surface, and some resin products exclude asphalt entirely.

How long before a resurfaced car park can reopen?

This depends on preparation, repairs, number of layers, temperature, weather and the selected product. Working life, overcoating time and vehicle cure time are different. SRS agrees the return-to-service requirements as part of the programme.

Can the work be completed in phases?

Phased working may be possible where the layout allows safe segregation, access and suitable installation continuity. Ramps, single access routes, curing and waterproofing details can limit the available options.

Is the finished surface slip resistant?

Texture and aggregate are selected for the intended use, contaminants, gradient and cleaning. Where performance testing is required, the method and acceptance criteria should be agreed for the installed finish. Cleaning, wear and spill control remain important.

Is resin bound suitable for car parks and SuDS designs?

Resin bound can suit appropriately designed ground-level parking areas. Vehicle loads, turning, the base, edges and drainage all need assessment. It can form part of a SuDS design when the complete construction supports the required drainage performance; the surface alone does not establish compliance.

Can I enquire about a bridge or footbridge deck?

Yes. Send the drawings, substrate and required system for review. Bridge surfacing is assessed separately, including any manufacturer or asset-owner requirements. SRS will confirm suitability and scope before accepting the work.

How much does resin car park surfacing cost?

The price depends on the area, existing surface, removal, repairs, waterproofing, detailing, finish, markings and access arrangements. Photographs, drawings and an approximate area help SRS begin a useful budget discussion before a site-specific quotation.
